The synergy of transactional analysis and compassionate communication is unique and effectively facilitates positive and sustainable transformation in individuals and groups. Transactional analysis provides the basis to better understand how we communicate and what triggers negative reactions and destructive behavior patterns of ours and others.

Compassionate Communication can be seen as a practical guide towards a less judgmental and more empathetic way of dealing with each other, including in the context of working across cultures.

In particular Asians and Westerners are often faced with special cross-cultural challenges that are sometimes beyond their own awareness. 8C Consulting understands and addresses those in a comprehensive way.

Increasing self-awareness and the effectiveness of collaboration within an organization improves the quality of leadership, generates better business results, reduces costly conflicts and eventually contributes to lower attrition rates in the workforce.

The eight C’s of 8C Consulting stand for: Candid, Compassionate, Cross-Cultural, Conscious, Constructive Communication & Collaboration.

Our expertise

Transactional Analysis

Transactional Analysis is one of the most effective psychological approaches to analyze and improve the way people interact with each other.

It is a simple but very effective model to explain human behavior. It helps to understand how we interact by explaining our interactions in a logical and structured way. Becoming aware of our own reaction patterns can initiate a change to a more balanced and constructive behavior.

The basic assumption of transactional analysis is that we act and communicate from three different ego states: Parent, Adult, and Child.

With some practice we can easily spot our own and others’ predominant ego states. Transactional analysis helps to better understand why we react the way we do, and how we can contribute to more constructiveness in our relationships and our communication in general.

In short, transactional analysis is a psychological framework that creates awareness, identifies destructive relations and interactions, and brings about positive change in behavior.

It was originally developed by the Canadian Psychiatrist Eric Berne in the 1960‘s and was further developed in the following decades until the present by other scholars. Today transactional analysis is widely and successfully applied in various areas such as Psychotherapy, Coaching, Consulting, Conflict mediation, etc.

Compassionate Communication

Compassionate Communication is a simple, yet powerful four step process that helps people resolve conflicts and empathetically connect with each other.

The purpose of Compassionate Communication (also known as NVC: Nonviolent Communication) is to respect the individual’s autonomy while at the same time ensuring an emphatic connection. This enables us to enjoy contributing to one another’s well-being. This is especially helpful when we request someone to change their behavior for our benefit. People applying this approach meet their needs much more effectively while avoiding or resolving conflicts e.g. with colleagues or direct subordinates at work, in relationships with partners or friends, or as parents with their children.

Communication is a basic human activity that is learned throughout life and applied on a daily basis, but unfortunately not always in the most effective way. If we work on becoming more compassionate in our way of communicating with each other, our professional and private lives can be much more fulfilling and peaceful.

Compassionate Communication was developed and successfully applied by the US-American Psychologist Dr. Marshall B. Rosenberg between the 1960’s and 1990’s.

It has been spread across the world since the publication of his book ”Nonviolent communication. A language of Life.” and has now become a well-recognized approach in the field of conflict resolution or coaching.

Cross-Cultural Expertise

With our expertise in psychology, we go beyond the traditional cross-cultural consulting strategy to reach a new level of insight and awareness.

We do so by developing an understanding for the fundamentally shared beliefs and values of the other culture, which allows mutual trust to grow.

It is crucial to understand the different values, attitudes, fears, and convictions deriving above all from the different philosophical ideas and cultural history in which each culture is deeply rooted. This is the prerequisite to develop an open-minded and nonjudgmental attitude of mutual respect.

Cross-cultural training or consulting that is only about teaching the do’sand don’ts of a particular culture is too superficial an approach to achieve this. What really counts is learning deep and true respect for each other and knowing how to express it in the right way. This is what creates true emotional safety and contributes to fruitful collaboration across cultures.
